Notice on the passing of R. Shlomo Biegeleisen

All אוהבי ספר join in mourning the passing of R. Shlomo Biegeleisen, זכרונו לברכה. One of the most knowledgeable Jewish bookdealers in recent Jewish history, he did not merely sell books. He proffered sound advice, introduced customers to each other, and – in general – provided a congenial setting for תלמידי חכמים, scholars, collectors, bibliophiles, and “ordinary” Jews to meet and exchange ideas. Many a חידוש and scholarly article resulted from a conversation that took place (or: was overheard) at Biegeleisen’s Jewish bookstore. Aside from his private customers and their collections, he helped build many of the leading public libraries, including those of prominent Yeshivos and prominent academic institutions. יהא זכרו ברוך!

Special כוס תנחומין to his wife Mrs. Gina Biegeleisen; to his brother and partner R.Moshe Biegeleisen; and to his son Mr. Yossie Biegeleisen. A third generation of Biegeleisens has now joined the family business, and there could not be better testimony to this family’s ability to transmit from one generation to the next their אהבת התורה ,אהבת ישראל, and אהבת הספר.

  1. I lived in the late ’60’s and early ’70’s on East Broadway about two blocks from the original store. I was not observant then but he knew my interests and always saved hard to get and rare books for me. He was a real mensch!
His father was then alive and anyone who goes to the Hebrew division of the NYC public library and looks at older books will see that it was bought from”Yakar Biegeleisen” at such and such a date.

    1. I had the big zchus to know, interact and admire Reb Shloime A”H for over 45’years…

As a young yeshiva bochur I would often take the subway from Flatbush in Sunday’s into the lower East side and spend some wonderful hours at the Biegeleisen sforim store, crammed with all types of sforim and yidden of all stripes
It was there i began my life long love affair with sforim and everything connected to them.
Whenever I would walk in Reb Shloime always had a cute word for me….

And of course In later years on trips to NY a stop on 16 ave was mandatory….

Reb Shloime was a real personality full of wit -often times sharp- and knowledge. A true And proud Belzer Chusid.

I , as I’m sure others have many anecdotes, perhaps for another time

My sincere condolences to his dear brother and partner -no less an icon- Reb Moshe shy’ and my dear friend And “dealer” – Reb Aharon – who continues to satisfy And fix my never ending addiction to sforim

      He will be sorely missed

  2. I too remember him from the 60’s and 70’s on the lower east side. His store was filled with new and old and everything in between. I received sound advice on which seforim to look for and purchase. May his memory be remembered for a blessing.

  3. My first memory in the store was 37 or so years ago looking for reading material for a long ride. Among the items I bought was a historical treatise from Prof. Leiman about R. Y. Emdin.
R Solomon was scrupulously honest and often cautioned me not to buy a Sefer which he called a cheat Sefer because it copied other material . I’ll miss his amazing ידיעות along with his demeanor.

  4. Dear Aharon,
    BDE!
    A legend in his time!
    The “shpitz” of “yodayah sefer”.
In spite of a tough facade, I knew him to be a sensitive father and caring and loving grandfather.
HaMokom Yenachem to your father. The world of seforim is saddened by our loss.

  5. BDE

I remember shopping for seforim and academic Judaica in the lower East side with Biegeleisen and Reb Shlomo proffering advice, and Rabinowitz, managed by Yaakov Elman, a few blocks from one another. A golden age of booksellers, though hard on my pocket,

  6. I remember him with much fondness. As a female student of both lomdishe sefarim and academic Jewish Studies, I was often the sole woman in a Bkl’n treasure house packed with men. R’ Biegeleisen always took my queries seriously and treated me with respect. Yehi zikhro barukh

  7. When I was in high-school at MTJ I worked for R. Shlomo and for R Moshe (wishing him long life). Wonderful bosses – I learned so much from them and recall their decency and menshlichkeit all these years later.

  9. Thanks for your blog post. I would also like to say that the health insurance broker also works well with the benefit of the coordinators of a group insurance policy. The health insurance agent is given a listing of benefits searched for by individuals or a group coordinator. What a broker may is look for individuals or perhaps coordinators which usually best match up those requirements. Then he provides his ideas and if both parties agree, the actual broker formulates a contract between the two parties.

  10. An additional issue is really that video gaming became one of the all-time greatest forms of excitement for people of nearly every age. Kids enjoy video games, and adults do, too. The particular XBox 360 has become the favorite gaming systems for those who love to have a lot of games available to them, in addition to who like to experiment with live with people all over the world. Many thanks for sharing your notions.
