Daf Yomi: Seforim on Masseches Taanis

Daf Yomi just started learning Masseches Taanis this week.  Earlier today I had a conversation with Rabbi Moshe Schwed of All Daf.  The purpose of the conversation was for me to briefly highlight some of the Rishonim and Achronim “out there” on this masechtah, adding some tidbits of interest about them. A nice amount of the conversation was devoted to discussing if Rashi on Taanis is by Rashi or not.

It’s only a half hour long. Many aspects could have been discussed at greater length but R. Schwed had mercy on potential listeners!

This is an experiment which we are trying on the Seforim Blog and we hope to have other presentations from others over time. Feedback or comments of any sort are appreciated.

This is the fourth such conversation I have had with him of this kind this year (earlier we discussed Yerushalmi Shekalim [here], Yoma [here], and Rosh Hashanah here).

      However as I was speaking fast to keep it as close to thirty minutes as possible, you missed it!
      I DID mention it, just go to 19:16. I only mentioned the second edition of the work.
      In general I will stress that this is NOT an attempt in any way to cover all the works on any masechtah. In the post note that I wrote “The purpose of the conversation was for me to briefly highlight some of the Rishonim and Achronim “out there” …
      I wrote the word some to stress that exact point.
      I technically have much more to say about each work etc But I have the listener in mind, how long could one listen to me babble on for already? Luckily on YouTube there is an option to listen to it at a higher speed.

    2. While not really relevant, Rabbi B. Z. Benedict established that the work on Taanit which Rabbi Hoffman edited is on the Rif, not on the masechet itself. See his מרכז התורה בפרובאנס, עמודים 133-183.

    I am well aware of Professor Halivini’s material. For this series, I am simply keeping it more “Kosher” to reach a larger audience.

  3. Why do pronounce the name as חיים מִיכָאֵל?
    The title page of his sefer (אור החיים) (Mossad HK edition) lists his name as חיים מיכל, which (using Yiddish spelling) I think is מייקעל
    (His Anglo-Saxon name was Hymann Michael)

    Interesting that you didn’t mention one of M”C’s r’ayos; that tosfos felt the need to give straight peirush.

    Also curious about your not mentioning the Sefer Hamichtam or Sefer Ha’me’oros, or (in general) Koveitz Shitos Kamai.
